Our Legacy

The Heart of a Hospital,
The Will of a Community

Our story is one of unwavering community spirit, born from a vision for a healthier Surrey.

It began with Dr. Fred Sinclair, a returning war veteran who saw a critical need for local healthcare. In 1947, his idea galvanized citizens to form the Ladies Auxiliary, a determined group of volunteers who embarked on a mission to build a hospital. Facing every obstacle with grit and determination—from grassroots "buy-a-brick" campaigns to famously invading the Legislature to secure funding—their efforts culminated in the opening of Surrey Memorial Hospital in 1959.

For over seventy-five years, our role has evolved from providing patient comforts to funding vital, life-saving equipment and spearheading multi-million-dollar campaigns for facilities like the Children's Health Centre. Today, we carry forward this powerful legacy of action and compassion, proudly continuing our work to support the ever-changing needs of our growing community.

Universally Loved

Seriously! But don’t take our word for it, here are some things people have to say about us.

I initially signed up to give back, but I had no idea how much I would get back. This isn't just a volunteer gig; it's a family. One minute you’re sharing a laugh with a customer over which cheesy greeting card is best, the next you’re helping a new dad find the perfect teddy bear. There’s so much joy in the small moments here. Plus, my coffee-making skills are now officially top-notch! I leave every shift feeling more connected to my community and, honestly, just happier.

My husband was in the hospital for two weeks, and it was one of the most stressful times for our family. The hospital is a busy, overwhelming place, but the Auxiliary's gift shop was my little oasis. The volunteers always had a warm smile and a kind word. It was more than just a place to grab a snack; it was a moment of peace and normalcy in a chaotic time. That small bit of human kindness made all the difference. Thank you for being the calm in our storm.

Sophia R., Grateful Wife

We can't overstate the impact the Auxiliary has on our daily work. The funds they raise for equipment are absolutely vital, but it’s their presence that truly uplifts the entire hospital. They are the friendly faces that greet anxious families, the helping hands that lighten our load, and the cheerful spirit that echoes through the halls. They are an integral part of our team, and we are incredibly fortunate to have their unwavering support.
