It is easy to think that volunteering here is simply about manning a till or directing foot traffic. That summary, however, misses the magic entirely. Our world is one of beautiful contradictions. We are the quiet oasis in the chaos of a busy hospital, a place of respite where a surgeon might stop for an energy drink before a major case, and five minutes later, a woman in the gentle stages of labour might wander down just for a chat, seeking a moment of peace. We are the insiders who know that when a whole wave of OR staff descends at once, something significant is happening upstairs. There is never a boring shift; there is only the rich, dynamic story of life unfolding around you.
But the true gift of this place isn't just in the stories you'll collect; it's in the doors that will open for you. A shift in our Gift Shop is never just a shift; it is a springboard. It’s a chance to meet new people and have experiences that foster incredible growth. I see it every day—I see a student hoping to work in surgery one day deep in conversation with a visiting specialist, forging connections and gaining insights that can’t be found in any textbook. I hear the many friendly exchanges between volunteers and with the nurses, healthcare students, staff and physicians, many of whom become our regular customers.
We are a fundamental part of this hospital. We are not looking for someone to simply fill a role; we are looking for the next member of our family.
